Chapter 9

“What the hell was that!?” Rhett yelled at the twitching Capitán Rápido when he returned inside the main building of Sterling Chemical. “You were supposed to save Rayne, not stop me from blasting Dark Lightning with water!”

Capitán Rápido’s movements were jagged as he pulled himself to a sitting position. “I warned you to stay away! You made me make a choice: You or Rayne.”

Rhett pulled the firehose to him and switched off the spraying water. “Then you chose wrong!” Rhett’s heart thundered as his body tensed. “I knew my risks! Rayne is who’s important.”

“I glimpsed the future and that lightning bolt was enough to stop your heart. You would have lost your life—and that’s permanent. Rayne’s at least still alive.”

“We don’t know that!” Rhett paced along the door opening, running a hand through his hair.

“We need to discuss this later. The police will be here in less than 10 seconds…” Capitán Rápido worked his way to his feet and placed a hand on Rhett’s shoulder.

Rhett shrugged Capitán Rápido off, but he was happy for the warning. He didn’t want to do any explaining to authorities. As Rhett fled towards the stairs, the Capitán was at his heels.

“Can’t you carry me out at super speed?” Rhett asked over his shoulder.

“You weigh too much. You’d slow me down to almost a crawl.”

“You carry Emma!”

“She’s probably half your weight, even now that she’s pregnant.”

“Just go, then. I’ll find my own way out.” Rhett turned his flashlight on as they crossed the dark basement.

“I’m not leaving you. Dark Lightning has your wife, and I’m afraid you’ll do something foolish.”

“I won’t do anything foolish.”

Capitán Rápido grew silent, and Rhett wondered if he was still behind him, but then his voice echoed in the passageway between buildings. “If the roles were reversed and Emma was in trouble, I’d do lots of foolish things.”

Rhett bit his lower lip, holding in his arguments. He needed silence to think. Where would Dark Lightning take Rayne? Assuming he didn’t snap her neck as soon as he was safely out of police view. Rhett exited the tunnel and climbed the steps with Capitán Rápido at his side. Once Rhett placed his hand on the exit door, Rápido stopped him.

“Let me check first,” Capitán Rápido said. “I’m a little tougher than you.”

“Can’t you see the future, anyway?” Rhett ground his teeth and took a step back.

Capitán Rápido pushed past him. “I can see the future, but it’s only ten seconds, and I don’t see it all the time.” He then stepped into the darkness for a moment, but then returned. “It looks good. The police have scattered and are preoccupied.”

Pushing his way out, Rhett marched to his motorcycle and threw his leg over the top, putting his keys into the ignition. “I’ll meet you somewhere else.” The engine roared to life, and Rhett fought the urge to squeal his tires as he put as much distance between him and the place where his wife had been kidnapped.

“Stay home,” Rayne had said.
